 1) Tehri Dam

       Tehri Dam is the tallest and largest dam in India. Its height is 260.5 m and length is 575 m. The dam creates a reservoir of 4.0 cubic kilometres with a surface area of 52 km2 . It was constructed on the Bhagirathi River near Tehri Garhwal in Uttarakhand. 



   2) Hirakud Dam

Hirakud Dam is the longest dam of India and world. It is built across the Mahanadi River about 15 kilometres from Sambalpur in the state of Odisha. Its height is 61m and main length is 4.8 km

 



     
3)Sardar Sarovar Dam

The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a concrete gravity dam built on the Narmada River in Navagam near Narmada District, Gujarat. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, receive water and electricity supply from the dam. The height of the dam is 138.68 m and length is 1210m.



     4) Bhakra Nangal Dam

Bhakra Nangal Dam is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, situated on the river Sutlej. Its height is 226m and length is 518m.




    5) Tungabhadra Dam

 Tungabhadra Dam is constructed across the Tungabhadra river in Vijayanagara district of Karnataka. Its height is 49.5m and length is 2449m. It helps in irrigation, generates electricity and controls flood.





   6) Indira Sagar Dam

The Indira Sagar Dam is located on the Narmada River in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. Its height is 92m and length is 653m. The foundation stone of this dam was laid by the former PM Mrs. Indira Gandhi on 23 October 1984.




    7) Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is the tallest masonry dam of India situated between Nalgonda district in Telangana and Guntur District in Andhra PradeshThe dam provides irrigation water to various districts along with electricity generation. Its height is 124m and length is 1550m.



   8) Mettur Dam

The Mettur Dam is the largest dam in Tamil Nadu, located across the river Kaveri. It provides irrigation and drinking water facilities for more than 12 districts of Tamil nadu. It is an important dam considered as livelihood of the state. Its height is 37m and length is 1700m.





   9) Bisalpur Dam

Bisalpur Dam is a gravity dam on the Banas River in Tonk district, Rajasthan. The dam was constructed for the purpose of irrigation and water supply. Its height is 40m and length is 574m.




  10) Koyna Dam

  Koyna Dam is one of the largest dams in Maharashtra constructed on Koyna river.The main purpose of the dam is to generate hydroelectricity with some irrigation in neighboring areas. Its height is 103m and length is 807m.
