IPL 2025: Which 3 Teams Will Be Very Keen on Rohit Sharma if T20 World Cup Winner Leaves Mumbai Indians?

Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to end his 13-year stint with five-time champions and his hometown side Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, scheduled to take place later this year or at the start of 2025.

The 37-year-old, who started his IPL career with now defunct Deccan Chargers, joined the Mumbai-based side in 2011 and captained the team to a joint record five IPL titles.

Despite his success as a skipper, MI stripped Rohit off his captaincy, handing over the role to Hardik Pandya ahead of the bygone IPL 2024, leading to a lot of unrest within the squad as well as among the fanbase.

There were rumours doing the rounds that Rohit could leave Mumbai Indians even before the season started via a trade. But the star Indian batter played on under Hardik as the team had their worst-ever last place finish.

After leading Team India to the T20 World Cup last month, fresh reports have emerged that Mumbai Indians may find it hard to hang to some of their big name stars, including Rohit, who had also hinted that IPL 2024 was his last with the Mumbai-based franchise.

Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants will reportedly target a player with captaincy material at the IPL 2025 Auction. CSK may have internal solutions and RCB also may look for different option as they will outbid.

Which 3 teams will be very keen on buying Rohit Sharma in IPL 2025 Mega Auction?

It will all depend on teams' retention plans and the rules as well as salary caps for the retained players. But three more teams are reportedly likely to do everything possible to buy Rohit at the auction.

Lucknow Super Giants: The Lucknow-based franchise is reportedly set to release KL Rahul, who led the team in the past 3 seasons, leaving then in need of a new captain. So, if they do release Rahul, then they are likely to aim for Rohit if their plan is to name an Indian player as the captain.
LSG also have Nicholas Pooran as a viable option, but if they manage to land Rohit Sharma after saving funds by releasing Rahul, then it's very possible that they will name the Indian T20 World Cup-winning skipper as their captain for the 2025 season. Rahul may similarly land up in RCB to fill three roles, including captaincy.

Delhi Capitals: DC also are reportedly making plans for the leadership role as the Delhi-based side may release current skipper Rishabh Pant, who has been linked with a move to CSK to replace Mahendra Singh Dhoni as wicketkeeper and may even takeover as skipper.

If Pant does leave DC, then the Capitals will be the most possible destination for Rohit's next IPL team as the franchise would come in to the auction with a hefty purse. They could, however, face competition from Punjab Kings on that front.

Punjab Kings: The PBKS also may be left without any captaincy material player following their retentions as they are likely to release both Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran, who have served in the role in the past three seasons.
Should PBKS save up on their purse heading into the auction, then they will be the team to watch as they could have the funds to splash on someone of Rohit's calibre. All this will depend on the salary cap, which could be decided in the BCCI meeting later this month.
